Review: Goldan Compass

If you have been reading the Christian press, you are well aware that a groundswell of controversy has surrounded the release of this film. The movie is based on a trilogy of novels by British author, Phillip Pullman. Much of the grumbling in the media tend to focus on the fact that Pullman has long been an very outspoken Atheist. In fact, there is speculation that Pullman wrote this series in response to the religiously saturated Chronicles of Narnia by fellow Brit, C.S. Lewis. The anti-Catholic sentiment that was present in the books, is purged from the big screen adaptation. So, if you have avoided watching this film for fear that your children will be exposed to some very hostile anti-faith material, you need not worry. The film in itself is an enjoyable piece of escapism. If you are a fan of the fantasy genre or loved the Chronicles of Narnia, chances are you will have a great time viewing this film. The acting is decent, and the visuals are stunning. It is evident at the close of the film that this is in fact intended to be a series, and given the decent box office this film has generated, I have no doubt we will be seeing more of Lyra and her magic compass. As always, it is best to decide for yourself. So do not let the negative press stress you out and keep you away from seeing a really good film.
